October, 2020 (Stag Lunch)

 There is no formal business meeting in October.  Instead, we hold our Fall Stag Lunch at Tavistock Country Club.

This year, due to Covid-19, our Stag Lunch was held outside, on the patio to allow for social distancing.

September, 2020

The regular business meeting was held on Thursday September 10, 2020. The 65 Club clubhouse was closed due to the Corona virus shutdown. The meeting was conducted at Haddonfield Borough Hall and remotely using the Zoom program. President Bill Brown called the meeting to order at 1:30 PM.  There were nine (9) members present at Borough Hall and an unknown number on Zoom.

Dave Tarditi led The Pledge of Allegiance and then the invocation.

Minutes – Fred Willis

·         The minutes of the last Business Meeting, held on August 13, 2020, were read.  They were accepted without changes.

·         The minutes of the last Board of Directors Meeting, held on September 3, 2020 and conducted on Zoom, were read.  They were accepted without changes.

President’s Report – Bill Brown

·         President Bill Brown asked Bob Parsons to report on the stag luncheon. Bob informed us the luncheon will be held indoors upstairs, at Tavistock, with 60 members permitted. The date is October 8 with a cash bar starting at 12:00.  The menu will be the same as last year and the cost will remain the same at $30. The secretary will send invitations to the borough commissioners and administrator.

·         Bill contacted Christ the King Church about having the November Wine and Cheese party there.  The church informed him the room normally used for organizations would no longer be rented out.  Bill will search now for another venue.

·         The Day after Thanksgiving Turkey Trot fundraising run has been cancelled.  The 65 Club will not provide support for the race.

·         The status of Salvation Army Red Kettle fundraising at the Haddonfield Acme is unknown.

·         Saul has written a second history of new members but the name has not been announced.  This history will be printed in the next newsletter.

Treasurer’s Report

·         Treasurer Dave Tarditi reported the club’s financial balance had decreased by only $400 since the beginning of the year.  This was due to several substantial donations by the club to various organizations.

·         Dave informed us that non guest members make donations in lei of dues payments.  The average of these donation is higher than the dues.

Reports

Welfare –Henry Leimkuhler.  Walt Baker reported for Henry.

·         Charles Legge had another operation on his broken hip.

·         Don Beck and his wife are still in quarantine which has been four months.

·         Richard Gimigliano is undergoing dialysis.

 

Membership - Roger Jacobs – 2^nd VP–

·         Roger gave a brief description of his trip to Canada.

·         Roger has stopped requesting dues from the four unpaid members and is unable to contact two of them.

·         Roger has contacted twelve churches to date about the club. Three churches have not yet responded to his request to distribute literature about the club.

Speakers – Frank Lodge – 1^st VP

·         Frank reported 65 Club member Rich Cunliffe will speak next week on Artificial Intelligence.

Activities 

Bowling – starting time has changed to 11:00 AM

Golf – 20 to 24 people consistently come out for golfing.  Last week the 65 Club Master tournament was held.

Joke Master

·         Everyone hid.  No joke.

·         President Bill Brown informed us the fall Stag Luncheon will be held.  Bob Parsons is heading up the event and requires six members to assist him with phone calls for sign up.  The menu will be the same as last year and the cost will remain the same at $30.

·         Roger is in Canada undergoing a quarantine and relayed his report to Al Schmidt.

·         Roger contacted the four (4) unpaid members to see how they were doing.  He did not request dues payment.

·         Roger has contacted twelve churches to date about the club. Three have accepted club literature for distribution.  One rejected distribution. Roger is working with the remaining eight (8) churches to distribute club literature.

Speakers – Frank Lodge – 1^st VP – Frank reported the speaker list is currently filled for several weeks.

Bill waived The Pledge of Allegiance and singing God Bless America for this meeting.  Al Schmidt gave the invocation in place of Chaplin David Tarditi, who was having sign in problems.

·         The Secretary gave a synopsis of the minutes from the July 2, 2020 Board of Director’s meeting. The most important issue was all trips currently scheduled were cancelled.

President’s Report – Bill Brown

·         President Bill Brown informed us the Haddonfield Civic Association had contacted him about the poppy memorial which had been scheduled for May.  The new poppy display date will begin October 10 and end November 11. Veterans Day/ Remembrance Day There is still time for anyone to purchase poppies and have them displayed.  For anyone interested they must contact Joe McElroy.

·         Roger reported the USA Today contest for best historical town to live in in the country has ended. The winner will be announced tomorrow and hopefully Haddonfield will win again as it did in 2018.

Welfare – Al Schmidt substituted for Henry Leimkuhler –

·         Mark Heston had been released from quarantine but had to return to the dentist and thus has to undergo another 14-day quarantine.

Membership - Roger Jacobs – 2^nd VP –

·         Roger reported he and Dave Tarditi had returned member Richard Sexton check to his family because Dick died before the check arrived.  His son wants the club to keep the dues and will reissue the check. His son wants to maintain contact with the club because his father greatly enjoyed it.  Dave will inquire if his son wants to join.

·         Roger discovered there is thirteen church in Haddonfield, this is the Korean church which meets in the Presbyterian Church Building.  Roger will compose a letter to introduce the club to the Korean church and Bill Brown will translate to Korean.

·         Roger has arranged for the club to meet at Borough Hall for the July 16 meeting and hopefully following meetings. Masks are required. All attendees are requested to be there by 1:15 to be assigned seats in accordance with social distancing requirements.  John Cokos will assist Roger in getting the seating correct. Bill will contact the Borough about setting up Power Point equipment since some speakers have requested it.

Speakers – Frank Lodge – 1^st VP – Frank reported the speaker list is currently filled through October. The presentations will be live and broadcast on Zoom to distant members.

Activities –

Bridge – Bernie reported the bridge players are playing online every Monday afternoon and Thursday evening. Many of the folks are also playing at other times during the week.

Bowling - Bowling may resume on Friday, Walt is waiting feedback from Laurel Lanes.

Golf – Golf had 24 players last week.

Trips – All trips are currently cancelled.

·         Bill contacted several venues for the Christmas trip, but none of the facilities have party plans because of the virus situation. The same with the casino's.

New Business

·         Bernie reported that Howard Rementer and he had replaced the front door lock which was jammed. it will use the same keys, Bill will contact the borough that the locks have not been changed. The same key will work, that key also fits the side door

·         Bernie and Howard also folded, stuffed and mailed the newsletter.

·         It was mentioned that the Lions Club flea market which we use for fund raising is believed to be scheduled for the third Saturday of September. Neil mentioned that that date is a Jewish holiday. Bill will make the Lions Club aware of this.  If it is not held this year, Bill suggested that we could hold our own yard sale using our back yard at a future date.

·         Bill reported that Tavistock was not open for large groups, our Fall luncheon date is still in doubt.

·         Also due to some work at the community room where we hold our wine and cheese, may not be available, an alternate would be the Methodist church community room.

The regular business meeting was held on Thursday June 11, 2020. The 65 Club clubhouse was closed due to the Corona virus shutdown. The meeting was conducted remotely using the Zoom program. President Bill Brown called the meeting to order at 1:30 PM.  The number of members on Zoom are unknown.

Bill waived The Pledge of Allegiance and singing God Bless America for this meeting.  Chaplin,  David Tarditi, gave the invocation.

The secretary gave a synopsis of the last Business Meeting held on May 14, 2020, which was conducted on Zoom. The most important issues were trips scheduled at the May meeting were still occurring and weekly speakers were still presenting via Zoom. 

The Secretary also gave a synopsis of the minutes from the June 4, 2020 Board of Director’s meeting. The minutes were not read.  The secretary informed the attendees the May Business Meeting and June Board of Directors Meeting minutes could be read on the club website.

Treasurer- Dave Tarditi gave the financial report.  The club is still in good financial shape. The bank balance is increasing and a CD was renewed for 24 months at 1.15%.

President Bill Brown informed us the Haddonfield Memorial High School graduation was being held at 6:00 PM on Saturday June 13 and if we knew anyone graduating to congratulate them. Bill thanked Rick Bonnette for his suggestion to hold an outdoor meeting at the clubhouse.  Unfortunately, the heavy rain today prevents trying the plan but it would be considered for next week.

Roger reported Haddonfield has been nominated by USA Today to be one of the best historical towns to live in in the country.  Haddonfield won this award in 2017 and is currently in second place in the voting for 2020.  One person, one vote daily is permitted until June 29.  Roger requested the club notify its members about the award and explain how the voting is conducted.  There were no opposing views so Roger and Phil Kinsey will compose a message and notify the membership.

Reports

Membership - Roger Jacobs – 2^nd VP – Roger reported club brochures have been distributed to the Grace Episcopal church and the Lutheran and Methodist churches.  This means nine churches, including the two black churches are currently not receiving the brochures. Roger will compose a letter describing the club’s benefits and obtain BOD revisions and approval. The letter will then be sent to the nine churches.  

Speakers – Frank Lodge – 1^st VP – Frank reported the speaker list is still filled currently filled with speakers who are willing to present using Zoom.  Some speakers prefer the live audience and decline the zoom presentation.  The next three speakers will present on organ repair, astronomy being done in Chile and beer tasting from Kings Road Tavern.

Welfare – Henry Leimkuhler – Henry reported Dan Columbi was hanging in there with dialysis. Several members, including Don Beck and Charles Legge, are still in quarantine at their assisted living homes. All members are happy to hear from Henry and the club.

Activities –

Bridge – Bernie reported members are still playing bridge through the web on Thursday evenings.

Bowling -Walt Baker provided some information on bowling but due to a bad connection the secretary was unable to understand it. 

Golf – due to state regulations golf has not resumed.  Until some shutdown regulations are revised, the golf courses will not open.

Trips - Bill Brown informed the club the August baseball trip status is unknown.  The Phillies do not know if they will be playing by then and have offered several alternatives.  These alternatives will be reviewed by the BOD in July.  It is also unknown, at this time, if the bus company will provide a refund.

The July trip to Shofuso is still proceeding.  A Signup sheet is on the club website and money will not be collected until the day of the trip.

The regular business meeting was held on May 14, 2020. The 65 Club clubhouse was closed due to the Corona virus shutdown. The meeting was conducted remotely using the Zoom program. President Bill Brown called the meeting to order at 1:30 PM.  There were about 25 members on Zoom.

Bill called for The Pledge of Allegiance but singing God Bless America was waived for this meeting.  Our Chaplin, David Tarditi, gave the invocation.

The secretary gave a synopsis of the last Business Meeting held on April 9, 2020, which was conducted on Zoom. The most important issue was the missing club mail and this was resolved. John Cokos had been picking up the mail which was unknown to the other officers. 

The Secretary also gave a synopsis of the minutes from the May 7, 2020 Board of Director’s meeting. The minutes were not read.  The secretary informed the attendees the Business Meeting and Board of Directors Meeting minutes were available from him via e-mail or they could be read on the club website.

Treasurer- Dave Tarditi gave the financial report.  The club is still in good financial shape. Diligent work by Dave, Roger Jacobs, and others to contact late paying dues members resulted in 133 out of 139 members have paid their 2020 dues.

President Bill Brown continued to give suggestions to club members for activities during the shutdown. This included recommending two movies `Grader’, a sports movie and `Taking of Pelham 1,2,3’ which is a 1970’s thriller starring Walter Matthau. Henry Leimkuhler suggested `The Theory of Everything’.  Bill also suggested members get together for walks and asked if members were interested in establishing a club singing group.

Speakers – Frank Lodge – 1^st VP – Frank reported the speaker lists is currently filled for June and July and also empty since all of the speakers prefer to speak to a live audience.  Frank will continue to search for backup Zoom using speakers, if the shutdown continues.  Zoom speakers, John Ganz and Sharon McCullough, will speak at the next two May meetings.

Welfare – Henry Leimkuhler – Henry reported Joe Haro passed away and suggested the club make a $50 donation to the Historical Society of Haddonfield in Joe’s name. Joe was an active member of the society. Henry informed us Tom Mervine was out of the hospital and back to card playing, Dan Columbi was hanging in there with dialysis and one member had been diagnosed with ALS.  Three members are still in quarantine at their assisted living homes.

Activities – There were no reports on activities.  There are no activities to report on.

Spring Luncheon – this has been cancelled and will be combined with the Fall Stag Luncheon.

Trips - Bill Brown informed the club the June, July and August scheduled trips are still proceeding.  Signup sheets will be placed on the club website and money will not be collected until the day of the trip.

Old Business –

Howard Rementer announced he was serving ice cream at Tavistock today

Bill suggested expanding the size of your home green donation jar. Contributions made at home will be delivered to the club when the meetings return to the club house.

Stuart Harting suggested members visit the new Giraffe at the Park sculpture and take their grandchildren if possible. Also, their grandchildren should enter the Name the Giraffe contest.

Joke master - Three jokes and stories were told.  Each was worse than the one before.

The Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of God Bless America were waived for this meeting.  Our Chaplin, David Tarditi, was unable to attend and Al Schmidt gave the invocation.

The secretary gave a synopsis of the minutes from the April 2, 2020 Board of Director’s meeting. The minutes of the last Business Meeting held on March 12, 2020 were not read.  The secretary informed the attendees the minutes were available from him via e-mail or they could be read on the club website.

Treasurer- In Dave Tarditi’s absence someone gave the financial report.  The club is still in good financial shape although twelve members have not renewed membership thus reducing the income by $240.

Reports

Membership - Roger Jacobs – 2^nd VP – Roger reported there were no new applicants at this time.  Roger also reported Member Joe Haro is gravely ill due to a heart problem.

Speakers – Frank Lodge – 1^st VP – Frank reported the speaker list is currently filled for another month.

Welfare – Henry Leimkuhler – Henry reported on several members including Joe Haro. Saul Resnick became a grandfather. On April 19 one member will reach 100 years.

Activities – There were no reports on activities.  There are no activities to report on.

Spring Luncheon - Bill Brown reported he had a discussion with Tavistock.  Its management does not know whether they will be open in May. A decision on holding the luncheon will be made later.

Trips - Bill Brown informed the club the three remaining scheduled trips will be held if possible. They have not been cancelled at this time. Whether the trips are held will depend upon the virus course.

Old Business – Howard Rementer announced he was unable to serve the members ice-cream today.

New Business - Bill suggested having a green donation jar at home. Contributions made at home will be delivered to the club when the meetings return to the club house.

Al Schmidt suggested having a grand re-opening when the virus is over.  This met approval

Bill reported there has been no recent mail delivery to the club house and the post office is not holding mail. Bill and Bernie will stop by the clubhouse frequently to determine why the absence.

Bill is working with Jack Poupard to have Tai Chi class video’s available during the virus shutdown.
